CHAPTER THIRTEEN

N O W

“I asked you a million times what happened to that hoodie. Where is it?” Fen crosses her legs and shakes her feet, freaking out on me. “You lied. You totally lied.” She flicks her wrist, swatting away my dishonesty as if it’s a bothersome bug. “You said you lost it in the fire, but you were wearing it in that photo Kyle Delamere took before the cops came.” She aims a heated finger between my eyes. “I knew it. I remember you had it on when we ran out of the woods, but you insisted I was wrong. You know it’s what Bobby saw in those photos. You know it, Jamie Lynn.”

I stare at Carter, gauging his reaction, or lack thereof. “I have no idea what happened to it,” I reply. “My mom—”

“Oh, spare us.” She rolls her eyes. “That story of your mom taking it from you the night before and losing it at the bar is just another lie. You had it on in the photo.”

“Drop it, Fen.” I kick my voice up a notch.

“Absolutely not. It couldn’t have just walked off on its own. Between the time Kyle took the photos and the cops arrived, it magically disappeared? Where’d it go? Tell us.” She pushes my leg.

I rub my shirt on my mouth, desperate to wipe away this conversation.

“It had blood on it.” She brings her knees to her chest, rocking. “I saw, and I remember. I never asked about it because I didn’t want to believe that maybe it wasn’t just his blood.”

“Don’t start this. We agreed not to talk about him.”

She hesitates, then lowers her head to her knees. “It wasn’t real. It wasn’t.”

I thought it would be years—decades, even—before this exchange took place between us. Far in the future, after Ryan’s found, not before.

She stops rocking and looks up. “You hid it because of Capone. Is that the only reason? Or was other evidence on it?”

“Like what?”

“Someone else’s blood.”

“Are we going there? Little Miss I-Have-to-Pee.” I turn away from her. “Stop haunting me with that incident.” I pull the neck of my tee over my nose.

“It wasn’t an incident,” Carter says. “It was a kill. You took him out.”

“Cool it. I don’t want his whimpering stuck in my head again. I won’t sleep. And Grace could be listening. He was the reason she left that night.”

“You don’t know why Grace left,” Carter says.

“Don’t change the subject,” Fen interrupts. “I want to know about the hoodie. Did Hodge take it?”

“What?” I’m alarmed she would ask such a question. “Why would Hodge take it?”

“To cover for you.” She points a stick at me. “If the cops found out you killed Capone hours before Ryan disappeared, they would’ve arrested you on the spot. I bet he took the hoodie to protect you.”

“I didn’t kill Capone,” I snap at her.

“Jamie.” Carter scoots closer.

I pull my legs up to my chest, launching a faster rocking motion than Fen. “You killed that dog, Carter. Don’t you guys blame it on me.
