CHAPTER THIRTEEN
N O W
âI asked you a million times what happened to that hoodie. Where is it?â Fen crosses her legs and shakes her feet, freaking out on me. âYou lied. You totally lied.â She flicks her wrist, swatting away my dishonesty as if itâs a bothersome bug. âYou said you lost it in the fire, but you were wearing it in that photo Kyle Delamere took before the cops came.â She aims a heated finger between my eyes. âI knew it. I remember you had it on when we ran out of the woods, but you insisted I was wrong. You know itâs what Bobby saw in those photos. You know it, Jamie Lynn.â
I stare at Carter, gauging his reaction, or lack thereof. âI have no idea what happened to it,â I reply. âMy momââ
âOh, spare us.â She rolls her eyes. âThat story of your mom taking it from you the night before and losing it at the bar is just another lie. You had it on in the photo.â
âDrop it, Fen.â I kick my voice up a notch.
âAbsolutely not. It couldnât have just walked off on its own. Between the time Kyle took the photos and the cops arrived, it magically disappeared? Whereâd it go? Tell us.â She pushes my leg.
I rub my shirt on my mouth, desperate to wipe away this conversation.
âIt had blood on it.â She brings her knees to her chest, rocking. âI saw, and I remember. I never asked about it because I didnât want to believe that maybe it wasnât just his blood.â
âDonât start this. We agreed not to talk about him.â
She hesitates, then lowers her head to her knees. âIt wasnât real. It wasnât.â
I thought it would be yearsâdecades, evenâbefore this exchange took place between us. Far in the future, after Ryanâs found, not before.
She stops rocking and looks up. âYou hid it because of Capone. Is that the only reason? Or was other evidence on it?â
âLike what?â
âSomeone elseâs blood.â
âAre we going there? Little Miss I-Have-to-Pee.â I turn away from her. âStop haunting me with that incident.â I pull the neck of my tee over my nose.
âIt wasnât an incident,â Carter says. âIt was a kill. You took him out.â
âCool it. I donât want his whimpering stuck in my head again. I wonât sleep. And Grace could be listening. He was the reason she left that night.â
âYou donât know why Grace left,â Carter says.
âDonât change the subject,â Fen interrupts. âI want to know about the hoodie. Did Hodge take it?â
âWhat?â Iâm alarmed she would ask such a question. âWhy would Hodge take it?â
âTo cover for you.â She points a stick at me. âIf the cops found out you killed Capone hours before Ryan disappeared, they wouldâve arrested you on the spot. I bet he took the hoodie to protect you.â
âI didnât kill Capone,â I snap at her.
âJamie.â Carter scoots closer.
I pull my legs up to my chest, launching a faster rocking motion than Fen. âYou killed that dog, Carter. Donât you guys blame it on me.
